After launching a gamification agency and taking on a handful of high-level clients, things were going great. It was 2021 and I was working to learn to grow an agency side of my course creation business. Within six months, my parents divorced. I didn’t think it would affect me so deeply as I was happily married, raising three boys of my own. All of the sudden, I wanted and needed more time-freedom.

This lead me to find Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing where you can reverse engineer your books by writing books that customers were already looking for. I spent all of 2022 doing this and within six months I hit my first 5k months, and it snowballed. By January 2023, I had crossed 11K in a month with one income stream. And then from circumstances out of my hands, a couple of self-publishers copied my books and Amazon blocked my books. That income stream stopped.

And the words of Russell Brunson, marketing expert, rang through my heart: platform independence. Except I took it one step further: platform income independence. I was able to create new books and in March 2023 I crossed $4,600.49 but the trauma of depending on a platform for an income brings me to the importance of becoming independent. Learn from my mistakes. I’m on a mission to help as many as people possible learn from my costly mistakes.

Here are the three steps to always remaining platform income independent:

  • Focus on fundamentals: Rather than solely mastering the nuances of a specific platform or tool, it is crucial to building a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that are applicable across various platforms. This includes understanding basic programming concepts, data analysis, project management, and problem-solving skills. By mastering fundamental skills, you can easily adapt to new technologies and platforms as they emerge.

  • Invest in your learning: Building a skill set that is platform-independent requires continuous learning and growth. Invest in learning opportunities such as online courses, workshops, and conferences. Stay up-to-date with industry trends and new technologies. This will help you broaden your knowledge base and keep your skills relevant.

  • Build a diverse portfolio: Don’t limit yourself to just one platform or technology. Experiment with a variety of tools and technologies and build a diverse portfolio of skills. This will not only make you more versatile but also help you to identify opportunities to combine skills from different platforms to create unique solutions that solve complex problems.

By focusing on fundamentals, investing in your learning, and building a diverse portfolio, you can build a skill set that is not dependent on any specific platform and achieve platform income independence.
