How I Went 365 Days Without Buying Clothes

03/23/2023

There is really no other way to say this. I had a shopping addiction. I bought something every day. The source of this addiction who have been a hole big enough to swallow me and that is exactly what it did.

During college, I got a job at Dillard's, which included sneaking employee discounts. This included anything already on sale. As a 23 year old girl, did I need a new set of pots and pans? No. Was it on sale? Yes. Did I buy it to feel a void? Yes.

Going back to my childhood, I was raised 2nd oldest of 8 children. We were not going out and buying clothes whenever we wanted. Each new school year, our indivudal budget ranged from $50.00 to $100.00. I wonder what type of emotional hardship that was on my mom to spend 600 bucks on clothes and have to tell her kids no.

This sent us to thrift store or Shopkos and somehow we made it happen. With some sisters being close in age, we could fight over and share clothes. It was fun.

By the time I had my own money, I spent it on losuy things like clothes. Not just for me, but for my siblings too. I think they loved it. They had new clothes from Dillards for back to school while I remembered Shopko cool lots.

Fast forward it got to the point that I was buying something everyday. I decided this was not who I wanted to be. I began searching online about fashion and found a woman in New York City pursuing a fashion fast. She gave herself ten rules and I decided to follow suit.

I had to pretty much avoid shopping malls and any department store.

I began to save money.

And was able to buy my first house as a single girl in her 20s, with a little help from her dad.

Fast forward 15 years, I don't stop the same.

I don't spend the same, unless we considered online courses and self-development investments, then yes, I am still that junkie.
